Awards and praise for Long Shadow’s "gripping" third season

Sweeping the Signal Awards and topping “Best of” lists, Long Shadow: In Guns We Trust has critics considering the show’s message and impact.

Long Shadow

2024 was a pivotal year for Long Shadow, with Long Lead releasing its third season of its #1-charting history podcast in the spring. Produced in collaboration with The Trace, Campside Media, and PRX and hosted by Pulitzer-finalist Garrett M. Graff, Long Shadow: In Guns We Trust chronicles how firearms moved from being an ordinary part of the background of rural life to a menacing element of modern American life.

The limited series podcast was named Best Podcast of 2024 by The Atlantic, Mashable, and The Week, and Audible similarly called it a 2024 Top Podcast. At the Signal Awards, Long Shadow: In Guns We Trust won for Best History Podcast; Documentary Podcast; and Activism, Public Service, & Social Impact Podcast. It was also nominated for the highly-coveted Best Audio Documentary Award by the International Documentary Association.

The Spectator calls Long Shadow: In Guns We Trust “a gripping podcast, providing a map for the evolution of a grim status quo.” Maybe so — though difficult to execute, the season’s last episode ended on a hopeful note. Then, just weeks after it was released, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy issued an advisory declaring gun violence "a public health crisis."

Meanwhile, Long Shadow: Rise of the American Far Right also continues to garner praise. The podcast’s second season — which explores how the modern domestic extremist movement grew from a fatal shootout on a mountain top in Idaho to an attempted insurrection at the U.S. Capitol — won a 2024 Edward R. Murrow Award in October. The Society of Professional Journalists also named Long Shadow: Rise of the American Far Right the Best Narrative Podcast at its Sigma Delta Chi Awards in July.
